Can dogs have avocados?
Sometimes – avocado flesh is generally safe in small amounts, but the pit and skin are dangerous.
Why it is or is not safe
Avocado contains a compound called persin. Dogs are more resistant than some other animals, and small amounts of ripe flesh are not usually toxic. However, the pit is a serious choking and obstruction hazard, and the high fat content can cause stomach upset.
How to serve
If offered, give only a small amount of ripe flesh with the pit and skin completely removed. Do not allow access to whole avocados or pits.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. If pit is swallowed: choking, blockage, repeated vomiting, lethargy.
