Can dogs have coconuts?
Sometimes – plain coconut flesh is not toxic, but it is high in fat and can cause stomach upset.
Why it is or is not safe
Coconut meat and coconut oil are not considered toxic to dogs. However, the high fat content can trigger diarrhea and, in large amounts, may increase the risk of pancreatitis in sensitive dogs.
How to serve
Offer only a small amount of fresh coconut meat occasionally. Avoid sweetened coconut, coconut candy, and products with added sugar. Do not allow your dog to chew on coconut shells.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort. In severe cases of high fat intake: lethargy or pancreatitis signs.
